The Complete Student Car Shipping Guide

Shipping a car to college or back home for the summer? This complete student guide covers timing, costs, campus delivery, what to pack, and how to avoid the expensive mistakes first-time student shippers make.

Shipping a car to college is one of those things that most families figure out under pressure, usually two weeks before move-in when someone finally asks "Okay but how is the car actually getting there?"

This guide is so you don't have to do it that way.

When to Book (This Is the Most Important Section)

College moves are the most predictable, calendar-driven shipping events in the auto transport calendar. Every carrier knows they're coming. Every broker knows the windows. Prices and availability are determined almost entirely by when you book relative to the wave.

Fall move-in (mid-August to early September): This is the single busiest week for student car shipments every year. The entire country's freshman and transfer population is moving at once, and carriers are maxed out.

  • Book by mid-July for late August delivery. Seriously, by July.
  • Book by early August for early September delivery, but expect tighter pickup windows and higher rates.
  • If you're booking in late August for a late August delivery, you're looking at expedited pricing at minimum.

Spring end-of-year (mid-April to late May): Less concentrated than fall but still busy as students move out. Book 2 weeks ahead.

Summer and January: Low-demand periods. Excellent pricing, fast pickup, full carrier availability.

Real-Life Example

Dylan planned to drive down to Miami, FL with friends, but with hurricane season in full swing, his parents vetoed the idea fast. Instead, we picked up his 2018 Subaru Forester in the suburbs of Chicago, IL and delivered it right to campus. Dylan flew, relaxed, and still got to roll into his first semester with his own car.

Shipping your car to college makes a ton of sense. It helps you avoid long drives, saves time (and money), and keeps your car in great shape. You focus on move-in day, we’ll handle the miles.

Campus Delivery: What to Expect

Campus delivery is one of the logistically interesting parts of student car shipping. A few things to know:

Large carriers can't reach everywhere. An 80-foot car hauler cannot drive through the narrow streets of most historic campus neighborhoods, into parking garages, or through access gates designed for pedestrian traffic. This is completely normal. Your driver will arrange delivery to a nearby accessible location, a large parking lot, a wide road outside the campus gate, an off-campus street.

Move-in weekend congestion. If your move-in coincides with the rest of your class, the area around campus will be extremely congested. Consider booking delivery to your off-campus apartment if you have one, or to a campus parking facility that accepts external vehicles.

You or a representative must be present. The final vehicle inspection and Bill of Lading signing requires a person. If you're flying in to campus, coordinate delivery timing with your arrival.

Cost Ranges for Common College Routes

Route Estimated Cost (Open)
New York → Boston $350–$550
California → Arizona (e.g., LA → Tucson) $450–$650
Midwest → Southeast (e.g., Chicago → Atlanta) $750–$950
East Coast → Midwest (e.g., DC → Columbus) $550–$750
South → Northeast (e.g., Dallas → Philadelphia) $900–$1,150
California → East Coast $1,200–$1,500

What to Do With the Car at School

A few questions students often ask:

Do I need to update my car insurance? Yes, if you're moving to a different state. Contact your insurer before the car arrives at school. Many states require local registration after a period of residency.

Can I leave the car at a parking garage or lot while it's being delivered? Yes. Provide the facility address and contact. We'll coordinate delivery with the garage or attendant.

What if I'm studying abroad for a semester? Don't leave the car sitting unused for months. Consider shipping it home. A car with a dead battery and flat-spotted tires from three months of disuse creates an unpleasant homecoming.

Q&A

Q: Can a parent book on behalf of a student?

Absolutely. Parents book student shipments regularly. The student just needs to be present (or send an authorized representative) at pickup and/or delivery.

Q: Can I pack things in my car for the college move?

Up to 100 lbs of soft, non-fragile items in the trunk or cargo area. Bedding, clothing, and books are fine. Electronics, fragile items, and valuables are not covered by insurance and should go separately.

Q: What if my campus has a specific move-in window for vehicles?

Let us know the campus delivery restrictions when booking. We'll coordinate the carrier to deliver within that window wherever possible.
