Finalizing Payment with the Driver at Delivery

Paying the driver at delivery is simple. Here's exactly what to bring, accepted payment methods, tipping etiquette, and what to do if there's a payment dispute.

When Do I Pay the Driver?

Final payment to the driver happens at delivery, after your vehicle has been inspected and you've signed the Bill of Lading. The driver will not release the vehicle until payment is received.

This applies only to Cash Saver Price customers. If you chose the Card Price option, you paid in full at dispatch and owe nothing at delivery.

Accepted Payment Methods at Delivery

Method Notes
Cash Always accepted. Bring exact change. Drivers rarely carry change.
Cashier's check From your bank, made out to the carrier company name. Confirm exact name with your logistics specialist before getting the check.
Money order Widely accepted. Payable to the carrier.
Zelle Accepted by many drivers. Confirm 24+ hours before delivery.
Venmo / Cash App Accepted by some drivers. Confirm in advance.
Personal check Not accepted by most carriers.
Credit/debit card Not accepted directly by most drivers at delivery.

💡 Pro tip: Confirm payment method with your driver at least 24 hours before delivery. This avoids any last-minute surprises.

How to Prepare for Cash on Delivery (COD) Payment

  1. Know the exact balance: it's in your dispatch confirmation and booking summary
  2. Confirm payment method with your driver (call or text at least the day before delivery)
  3. Get a cashier's check from your bank at least one business day before delivery
  4. Have exact cash if paying in cash, $50s and $100s are easiest
  5. Zelle/Venmo: Have the app open and confirmed with the driver's account details before they arrive

The Order of Events at Delivery

  1. Driver calls 2-4 hours ahead with ETA
  2. Vehicle is unloaded
  3. You complete the final inspection with the driver
  4. Any damage is noted on the delivery Bill of Lading
  5. You and the driver both sign the BOL
  6. You pay the remaining balance
  7. Driver releases the vehicle and departs

Tipping the Driver

Tipping is optional but appreciated, especially for long-haul deliveries and exceptional service. Common tip amounts:

  • Short routes (under 500 miles): $20-$40
  • Mid-range routes (500–1,500 miles): $40-$60
  • Long-haul / coast-to-coast: $60-$100+

Tips are paid directly in cash and are separate from your shipment payment.

Q&A

Q: What if I don't have payment ready and the driver arrives?

The driver will typically wait briefly, but they cannot hold the vehicle indefinitely. Contact your logistics specialist at (760) 932-2886 immediately if you're having trouble with payment.

Q: What if the driver asks for more money than my quote?

Do not pay more than your confirmed balance. Call Web Auto Transport immediately at (760) 932-2886. This should not happen and we will intervene.

Q: Can someone else pay the driver on my behalf?

Yes. Any authorized delivery representative can handle payment. Notify your logistics specilaist in advance so the carrier is expecting the alternative contact.

Q: Will the driver give me a receipt?

The signed delivery BOL is your primary receipt for the full transaction. Web Auto Transport also sends a payment confirmation for the dispatch portion paid to us.

Q: What if I paid Card Price. Do I owe anything at delivery?

No. Card Price customers pay the full amount at dispatch. No payment is due at delivery.
