How to Choose a Reputable Car Shipping Company

Not all car shipping companies are equal. Here's exactly what to look for, and what to avoid, when choosing an auto transport company you can trust.

The 7-Point Checklist

Before booking with any car shipping company, verify these seven things:

1. Active FMCSA License

Every legitimate auto transport broker and carrier must have an active MC (Motor Carrier) number registered with the FMCSA. Look it up free at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. If a company won't share their MC number, do not book with them.

2. Real Customer Reviews

Check Google Reviews, Better Business Bureau (BBB), Reddit, Trustpilot, and TransportReviews.com. Look for patterns: consistent late pickups, poor communication, or unresolved damage claims are red flags. A handful of bad reviews is normal; a pattern of them is not.

3. No Full Upfront Payment

Legitimate brokers don't charge the full amount before assigning a carrier. At Web Auto Transport, you pay $0 at booking and a small partial payment only after a verified carrier is confirmed. Any company demanding full payment upfront before dispatch is a red flag.

4. Transparent Pricing

Your quote should include all costs: carrier fee, broker fee, fuel, tolls, and insurance. Ask specifically: "Is this the final price, or could it change?" Watch for bait-and-switch pricing. See Understanding Bait-and-Switch Tactics for details.

5. Active Cargo Insurance

The carrier must have active cargo insurance (minimum $100,000-$250,000). Ask for a Certificate of Insurance (COI) before your vehicle is picked up.

6. Real Humans Answering the Phone

Call before you book. If no one answers and no one calls back, that's how your shipment will go too. A responsive support team is the single best predictor of a smooth experience.

7. Clear Cancellation Policy

You should be able to cancel before dispatch with a full refund. If a company charges non-refundable deposits just to search for a carrier, walk away.

Red Flags to Avoid

  • Quote is dramatically lower than all competitors (bait-and-switch)
  • No MC number listed on the website
  • Requests full payment via Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App
  • Cannot name a specific carrier before pickup
  • No response to calls or emails
  • No written confirmation of your order

Q&A

Q: Should I always choose the cheapest company?

No. An unusually low quote usually means the company hasn't actually secured a carrier at that rate. You'll face delays, price hikes, or worse. Choose based on value: verified license, good reviews, responsive support, and transparent pricing.

Q: How do I verify a company's FMCSA license?

Go to safer.fmcsa.dot.gov, enter the company's MC number or name, and click "Company Snapshot." Confirm the license is active, insurance is current, and authority type is correct.

Q: What's a surety bond and why does it matter?

All brokers must carry a $75,000 surety bond required by the FMCSA. It's a financial guarantee that protects you if the broker acts fraudulently or fails to pay the carrier.

Q: Can I trust a company I found on a lead generator website?

Exercise caution. Lead generators sell your information to multiple brokers simultaneously. The company that contacts you may or may not be reputable. Always verify their FMCSA credentials independently.

Q: Is a money-back guarantee a good sign?

Yes. It signals the company is confident in its ability to fulfill your order. Web Auto Transport offers a 100% money-back guarantee if we cannot dispatch your vehicle.
