How to Compare Car Shipping Companies: The Buyer's Guide
Not all car shipping quotes are equal. Here's the framework for comparing auto transport companies on pricing, insurance, service, and trustworthiness, not just the number.
Why "Lowest Quote" Is the Wrong Metric
The car shipping market has a fundamental problem: it's easy for any company to show you a number lower than the real market rate. The real cost is revealed later, at dispatch, when a carrier "can't be found" at the low price, or at pickup, when the driver asks for more.
The right comparison metric is total value: price + reliability + service + protection.
The 8-Point Comparison Framework
1. FMCSA License Status
Verify every company's MC number at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. It takes 30 seconds. An inactive or missing license is a disqualifying red flag.
2. Upfront Payment Policy
Legitimate brokers don't charge full payment before assigning a carrier. Compare:
- Does Company A charge a deposit just to start searching?
- Does Company B (Web Auto Transport) charge $0 until a carrier is confirmed?
3. Price Lock / Rate Guarantee
Will your quote hold from booking to dispatch? Ask each company explicitly: "Can my price change after I book?"
4. Insurance Coverage
- What is the carrier's minimum cargo insurance limit?
- Does the broker carry contingent cargo insurance?
- What's the process if damage occurs?
5. Cancellation Policy
You should be able to cancel before dispatch with a full refund. Any company that won't refund a pre-dispatch cancellation is problematic.
6. Customer Reviews (Pattern, Not Volume)
Don't count stars, read patterns. Search for reviews mentioning:
- "Price increased after booking" - bait-and-switch
- "No one answered" - support failure
- "Car arrived damaged" - claims handling
- "Didn't show up" - dispatch failure
7. Support Accessibility
Call before you book. How fast does someone answer? Are they informative or evasive? Post-booking support quality predicts your experience during the shipment.
8. Transparency About the Process
Does the company explain who will actually move your car? Do they disclose they're a broker (not a carrier)? Opaque companies have something to hide.

10 Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Company
- What is your MC number and FMCSA license status?
- How much do I pay upfront, before a carrier is assigned?
- Can my price change after booking?
- Who actually moves my car, your trucks or contracted carriers?
- What cargo insurance coverage will my vehicle have?
- What is your cancellation policy before and after dispatch?
- How do you handle damage claims?
- Who is my point of contact once I book?
- Will I get the carrier's name and contact info before pickup?
- What happens if the assigned carrier cancels last minute?
Red Flags in Any Quote
- Price dramatically lower than all other quotes (>20% below average)
- Full payment required before carrier is assigned
- No MC number on the website
- Can't answer specific questions about their license or insurance
- Requests payment via Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App only
- Vague about who is doing the actual transport
