Shipping Multiple Cars at Once: The Complete Multi-Vehicle Guide

Shipping two or more cars at the same time saves money, simplifies logistics, and reduces stress. Here's everything you need to know about multi-car transport, pricing, discounts, coordination, and who it's right for.

Most people don't realize they can ship two or more vehicles on the same order until they're already deep into booking one. If you're moving a household, running down a snowbird season with two cars in the driveway, or buying multiple vehicles at auction, multi-car shipping isn't just possible, it's almost always the smarter financial and logistical move.

Here's how it works, what it costs, and how to make it go smoothly.

Who Ships Multiple Cars?

Multi-car shipments are more common than most people expect. The typical scenarios:

Families relocating across state lines: Two working adults, two cars. Neither person wants to drive separately across the country while the other flies with the kids. Shipping both solves it cleanly.

Snowbirds with two vehicles: A car and a truck, or two vehicles shared by a couple who splits time between states. Shipping both simultaneously means one coordinated trip instead of two separate logistics projects.

Online car buyers consolidating purchases: Someone buying multiple vehicles from dealers, auctions, or private sellers in the same region. Grouping them into one order reduces cost and coordination overhead.

Dealerships and wholesalers: Dealer-to-dealer transfers, auction pickups, and lot repositioning often involve multiple vehicles on a single run. See our Dealer, Fleet & Auction Shipping Hub for dedicated business account options.

Neighbors or friends moving to the same area: Two households relocating to the same city at the same time. Combining orders means both get a discount.

The Multi-Car Discount: How Much You Actually Save

Web Auto Transport offers a 5% or more discount when you ship two or more vehicles on the same order.

The discount exists because shipping multiple cars together is genuinely more efficient for the carrier network. Two cars at the same pickup address means one stop instead of two. Combined, they fill more of a trailer. The carrier saves time and fuel and we pass a meaningful portion of that savings back to you.

Vehicles Discount
1 vehicle Standard pricing
2 vehicles (same order) 5%+ off per vehicle
3+ vehicles (same order) Contact us, volume pricing applies

Real-Life Example

The Harrison family was relocating from Chicago, IL to Tamp, FL. Their 2022 Honda Accord quoted at $975 and their 2019 Ford F-150 quoted at $1,100, a combined $2,075 shipping separately. Booking both on the same multi-vehicle order brought the combined total to approximately $1,870, saving them over $200.

Same Pickup, Same Delivery vs. Different Locations

The most straightforward multi-car shipment has both vehicles at the same pickup address and going to the same delivery address. That's the scenario carriers love and where you'll see the best pricing and fastest pickup.

But it doesn't have to be that way:

Different pickup addresses, same delivery: One car at your house, one at your workplace or a neighbor's address. Manageable, we coordinate two pickups on the same order.

Same pickup, different deliveries: Both cars leave from your home, but one goes to your new house and one goes to your adult child's address nearby. Common for family relocations.

Different pickup and delivery for each: More complex and may reduce the discount, but still bookable. Contact us directly so a logistics specialist can structure this correctly.

How the Logistics Actually Work

When you book two vehicles on the same order, here's what happens behind the scenes:

  1. We search for a carrier with available space for both vehicles on your route simultaneously. If both vehicles are similar in size (two sedans, two mid-size SUVs), this is straightforward, most open carriers haul 7-9 cars and can accommodate two from the same shipper.
  2. If the vehicles are different sizes (a sedan and a lifted truck, for example), we may need to split them across two carriers running the same corridor. When that happens, we coordinate the two dispatches closely so they arrive within the same delivery window.
  3. Two separate Bills of Lading are completed, one per vehicle. Each car gets its own pickup inspection, its own condition record, and its own delivery sign-off. Don't skip either inspection just because you're doing two at once.
  4. Payment structure: The dispatch payment and final balance apply per vehicle, consistent with your pricing option (Cash Saver or Card Price).

Preparation: Two Cars, Not Double the Work

Preparing two vehicles for shipping follows the same checklist as one, you just do it twice. The key things:

  • Photograph both vehicles thoroughly before pickup, all sides
  • Remove personal items from both, keep under 100 lbs in the trunk of each if you need to pack anything
  • Fuel under ΒΌ tank in both
  • Remove toll passes and parking permits from both
  • Disable both alarms
  • Have two sets of keys ready, one set per vehicle for the driver

If the vehicles are being inspected by the same driver at the same time, walk around both with them systematically. Don't let one inspection rush the other.

Combining the Neighbor/Friend Discount

Here's a tip most shippers don't know: if you and a neighbor or friend are both shipping vehicles around the same time to similar destinations, you can combine your orders and both receive the multi-car discount, even if the cars belong to different households.

The key requirement is that the vehicles are booked on the same order, have a compatible pickup location, and are heading to the same general destination corridor. Contact us to structure this.

Special Considerations by Vehicle Type

Two different-sized vehicles: A full-size truck and a compact sedan on the same order work fine, but trailer space planning is different. The truck takes up roughly 1.5 standard trailer slots. We account for this in carrier assignment.

One operable, one inoperable: If one of your vehicles doesn't run, we assign a winch-equipped carrier and flag it at booking. The inoperable vehicle adds a small surcharge but doesn't prevent shipping both together.

One standard, one specialty (classic, EV, lowered): If one vehicle requires enclosed transport and the other is fine on open, we can handle this two ways: enclose both for simplicity and maximum protection, or split carriers. Discuss with your logistics specialist at booking, the right answer depends on your timeline and budget.

Q&A

Q: Do both cars need to be ready on the same day?

Ideally yes, if they're at the same pickup address. Staggered pickups from the same location are sometimes possible but may affect pricing and carrier assignment.

Q: Can I ship three or four cars at once?

Absolutely. Three or more vehicles typically qualify for volume pricing beyond the standard multi-car discount. Contact us directly for a custom quote.

Q: What if one car is ready but the other isn't?

Let us know at booking. We can sometimes stage the shipments so they're dispatched close together but not necessarily on the same day. This may reduce the discount, but we'll work with your situation.

Q: Do I get two separate tracking updates?

Yes. Each vehicle has its own dispatch confirmation, carrier information, and delivery window. You'll receive separate updates for each, though we coordinate them to be as close together as possible.

Q: Can I use different payment methods for each vehicle?

Yes. Each vehicle's balance can be handled independently at delivery if needed.

Q: Is multi-car shipping available for enclosed transport?

Yes. Multi-car discounts apply to enclosed transport as well. Enclosed carriers typically hold 1-6 vehicles, so both cars can often fit in the same trailer.

Q: What if the cars belong to different people (e.g., me and my spouse)?

The order can be booked under one name with separate delivery contacts designated for each vehicle. At pickup, anyone authorized by the vehicle owner can sign the BOL.
