Can I Get a Quote Without Knowing My Exact Address?
You do not need your exact pickup or delivery address to get an accurate car shipping quote. A city or ZIP code is enough. Here is why, and what to provide before pickup.
Short Answer: Yes
You can get a fully accurate car shipping quote using nothing more than a city name or ZIP code for both your pickup and delivery locations. You do not need a street address to book. You do not need to know exactly where the car will be picked up or dropped off.
This comes as a surprise to many customers, but it reflects how auto transport pricing actually works.
Why the Street Address Does Not Change Your Quote
Car shipping pricing is based on the route between two geographic areas, not the distance between two specific street addresses. The cost to ship a car from Chicago to Miami is determined by the corridor, the carrier market on that lane, the time of year, and your vehicle type. Whether the pickup address is on the north side of Chicago or the south side changes the quoted price by exactly zero dollars.
When you enter your city or ZIP code, our quoting system calculates the real-time market rate for that corridor based on current carrier availability and demand. The street address plays no role in that calculation.
The only exception worth knowing about is geographic remoteness, which is covered below.
A Real-Life Example: Priya's Corporate Relocation
Priya accepted a job offer in Austin, TX while still living in Boston, MA. Her start date was six weeks away and her company was covering the cost of shipping her car. One problem: she had not yet signed a lease in Austin. She did not have an address.
She called Web Auto Transport expecting to be told to wait until she had her new address confirmed. Instead, her coordinator told her she could get a quote and even book immediately using her Boston address for pickup and "Austin, TX" as the delivery city.
She booked that day. Her quoted price was locked for 30 days under RateShield. Three weeks later, once she had signed her lease and had a street address in Austin, she called back and added the delivery address to her order. The quoted price did not change.
Her car was picked up four days after her First Available Pickup Date and delivered to her new Austin address eight days later.
Priya said: "I assumed I had to wait. Finding out I could lock in the price immediately, before I even had an apartment, was genuinely useful. It took one thing off my plate at a stressful time."
What You Actually Need for an Accurate Quote
To generate a real, bookable quote, you need four things:
- Pickup city or ZIP code. The city your car is currently located in or the area you want it picked up from.
- Delivery city or ZIP code. The city or general area where you want the car delivered.
- Vehicle year, make, and model. Vehicle size affects carrier fit and therefore price.
- Your First Available Pickup Date. The earliest date your vehicle will be ready for collection.
That is it. No street address required at the quote or booking stage.

When Do You Need to Provide the Exact Address?
The exact pickup and delivery addresses are needed before a carrier is dispatched, not before you book. Once a carrier is assigned to your shipment, the driver needs to know where to go.
In practice, this means you have from the time you book until shortly before dispatch to confirm your exact address. For most customers, that is several days. If your situation changes, just call us or update your order.
Provide your exact address as soon as you have it. The earlier we have it, the more efficiently we can coordinate your pickup window.
The One Situation Where Location Detail Does Matter: Remote Areas
While city or ZIP code is sufficient for quoting in the vast majority of cases, there is one scenario where your specific location affects both price and timing: remote or rural areas.
Carriers run fixed interstate routes and prefer pickup and delivery locations that do not require significant detours from their main corridor. If your pickup or delivery address is in a rural area more than 50 miles from a major highway or city, carrier availability may be more limited and the quote may reflect that.
If you are in a rural area, mention it when you call or add a note to your online order. Your coordinator will advise whether your location affects routing and whether a nearby meeting point might make dispatch faster.
Can I Book Without Any Address at All?
For the pickup location, you need at least a city or ZIP. Our system cannot calculate a route without knowing your general origin and destination.
If you are genuinely unsure of even the city (for example, you are deciding between two destination cities), get quotes for both scenarios. It takes two minutes and gives you accurate pricing for each option before you commit.
Q&A
Q: Will my price change when I add the exact address later?
No. Your quoted price is based on the route corridor, not the specific address. Adding your street address after booking does not affect the rate. If your RateShield window is still active, your price is locked regardless.
Q: What if I am shipping to a storage facility or a third-party address?
That is completely standard. Many customers ship to a storage unit, a family member's address, a dealership, or a workplace. Provide the address of the delivery location as soon as you have it and we will coordinate accordingly.
Q: I am moving and my apartment availability depends on my arrival date. What should I do?
Use the building's address or the property management office address as your delivery point. Coordinate with the property manager to ensure someone is available to accept the vehicle, or designate a nearby accessible meeting point. Call us and we will help you work out the logistics.
Q: Can I ship to a P.O. Box?
No. Carriers need a physical address with road access. A P.O. Box cannot be used as a delivery address. Use the nearest physical address where a large truck can access the vehicle.
Q: What if I change my delivery city after booking?
Contact us before a carrier is assigned. Changing the delivery city is a route change and may affect pricing. We will recalculate and advise you on any difference before making the change.
Q: How far in advance can I book if I do not have my address yet?
You can book as far in advance as you like. RateShield locks your price for 30 days from booking. If your move is more than 30 days away, contact us and we will discuss timing options.
